Robin Wright turned 50 years old yesterday. In the Tonight Show clip above from 2014, she talks about her early experiences of New York City and a few other things. One of those things is her drunken experience from Studio 54, and meeting Mikhail Baryshnikov the morning after. Another thing is House of Cards, obviously. The show has rejuvenated Wright’s career, and rightly so. Kevin Spacey may be a terrific Frank Underwood, but Wright adds an extra dimension as Claire, a spouse who’s devoted to the evil cause the Underwoods share but still independent in a way that really challenges Frank. We’ve certainly seen that in seasons 3 and 4, and it’s clear that House of Cards wouldn’t be the same without her to a degree that sets the show apart from its British predecessor.

Wright is becoming increasingly involved with the show, having directed seven episodes and being named executive producer in season 4. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she describes herself as being bitten by “the director bug”. So, this is a learning experience for her as well. I’ve been critical of the show in the past, but I also noted the benefits and after season 4 I’m still behind it. One huge reason is Wright’s work as actress and director.

Robin Wright’s career looks very bright right now. Apart from House of Cards, she also has a role in the upcoming Wonder Woman (2017) and the Blade Runner sequel.
